LOS ANGELES, CA - For 2 days, the California Urban Partnership (CUP) convened over 150 people comprised of cannabis equity entrepreneurs, advocates and policymakers from regions across the state (Oakland, San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, Los Angeles and San Diego). Attendees were squarely focused on an agenda for defining equity, reinvestment and justice in California’s marijuana policies.
A key part of the 2023 Summit line up was The People’s Hearing on Cannabis Equity, which was presented by The Institute for MORE (a CUP program). Part 1 of the CUP’s highly anticipated documentary film series – [[[ When The Smoke Clears - Linked Here - WATCH NOW ]]] – was released to highlight how California is transferring billions of dollars in cannabis industry wealth away from BIPOC communities. Other hearing presentations featured data and political background on business and economic development, public health, tax revenue and criminal justice system reform. The hearing centered Survivors who have been disproportionately harmed, traumatized and impacted for decades by California’s racialized war to enforce its weed policies. The community-driven hearing gave Survivors an unprecedented kind of opportunity to connect with each other and be fully heard by policymakers and decision-making officials in a safe, uplifting and supportive space. Attendees indicated that they are hopeful for more state elected official interest, participation and support in 2024. We want to express deep appreciation to our sponsors, volunteers, and dedicated team who worked countless hours to make the vision for this Summit a reality.
